Case 15: The Science of Thermography

Client: Advanced Thermal Imaging, Inc.
Location: Manuels, Newfoundland & Labrador
Project Start Date: November, 2009

Challenge: Develop presence and awareness of a developing energy technology with strong imagery and content management capabilities.

Solution(s): InnovaCMS Content Management System with custom design.

Details: Tony Walsh, a certified thermographer and president of Advanced Thermal Imaging, Inc. has known InnovaIT senior partner Stephen Parsons for many years - and still counts him as one of his best friends, although the two now live in different provinces. Tony and Stephen formed their first business together in 1989 when they launched AD&S, Inc. - a company that focused on digital graphic design and desktop publishing as well as commercial digital animation. The company eventually closed, but not before Tony and Stephen had learned a great deal about business, digital technology, and friendship.

In late 2009, with Stephen celebrating his 10th year of ownership of web services businesses, Tony came to his friend for help in developing a presence for his start-up thermal imaging business, Advanced Thermal Imaging. Always keenly tuned to strong business trends and opportunities, Tony saw the opportunities evolving from the trend for environmental sustainability and energy efficiency in both residential and commercial environments. His strong interest in science and technology led Tony to explore some of the emerging technologies surrounding the trends. Thermal Imaging fit nicely with his background in construction, photography and digital imaging.  Tony recently completed the necessary training and certification in Thermographic Imaging. Armed with the technology and know-how, he formed Advanced Thermal Imaging (ATI) in 2009.

A major obstacle to making ATI profitiable is the need to get the word out about the company's presence in the province and to educate the market about the opportunities and benefits of thermal imaging in residential and commercial construction and maintenance. A call to Stephen was all that was needed to commit InnovaIT to another business relationship with Tony.

Content Management software - putting the power of publishing in his hands - hit a strong resonant chord with Tony, who had been thinking he would be dependent on a webmaster to maintain currency of information on his site. Using InnovaIT's own content management system InnovaCMS, the web development company created a strong design for the site that allows for plenty of contrast for the vibrant thermal images that Tony creates with his imaging equipment and software. The material from Tony's marketing material became the early content vehicles for the website at http://www.advancedthermalimaging.ca. Included in the site at present are a feedback form, service estimation application, and a marketing scroller that allows ATI to feature service specials and seasonal information.

Launched at the beginning of March 2010, the site is slowly gaining ground in hits and search engine popularity. InnovaIT continues to support ATI beyond the hosting and development services, to help the company grow its online presence and reach. According to Tony Walsh "The sense of accomplishment is the one that stands out now. I really think we have created something worthwhile that any competition will find hard to match and that prospective clients will find professional, informative and knowledgeable (the three keys to a successful business reputation in a field like this)."

Stephen agrees. "We have further strengthened our bond of mutual care and respect for each other, while enjoying the challenge of marketing a business that few have even an awareness of yet. It is that kind of challenge that brought Tony and I together 20 years ago and I'm delighted to work with him on this new opportunity. Tony is out in front of an emerging field and that sometimes is a big challenge, but I like his chances of success better being there than playing catch-up five or six years from now. I am sure that together we will optimize the opportunities to leverage this into a successeful venture."
